Who we are and what we want

What are we trying to do?

Triple Pat was founded by Peter Boothe, with the goal of answering the question "How can I sleep easier knowing my alerting is working?"

When you chase this question, two interesting threads pop up:

  1. The person asking this question is the person who is running the alerting. So asking them to set up more services recurses to "How do I know the alarm's alarm is working?", which becomes "How do I know the alarm alarm's alarm is working?", ...
  2. If you have a stable system, then the alarm system working is a negative signal - there's no alarms. This means "no alarms are firing" and "the alarm system is broken" have the same signal. We need to tease those apart.

To address these two things, we need to provide a service that is, as much as possible, not run by the person doing the worrying and where a lack of a signal causes an alarm to fire. So that's what Triple Pat provides!
